As Seen From Fresh Eyes

It was such a privilege to see Shea today, finally, after waiting for a week. I arrived around 5:30 this afternoon. I found Jeanne Burch and Pam Anderson in the waiting room.

Pam reported that when she saw Shea earlier this morning, she was moving a great deal, lifting her legs and moving them vigorously. This is a good sign. Pam also said that when Susan caressed and kissed Shea, she noted a strong spike in Shea’s heart rate! She said it was beautiful to see the power of mother-love on the monitor.

We said hello and then admired the jig-saw puzzle Jesse had just completed. It was a map of San Diego complete with the zoo and the convention center. Quite a feat.

It was wonderful to see her face! It’s Shea! I was amazed and so relieved to see that except for a small stitch mark between the chin and the lower lip, there’s not a mark on her face. There’s also a small stitch under the chin but it’s not visible because of the tracheostomy apparatus.

While I was in the room, Dr. Christie came by and briefed us on the two procedures he and the surgical team had performed just a few hours earlier.

The tracheostomy begins by creating an opening through the neck into the trachea (windpipe). Then a small tube is inserted to provide an airway and also to remove secretions from the lungs. The purpose of the procedure? Until now Shea has been breathing (with ventilator assistance) through a tube which goes in through her mouth. In order to do the facial surgery this Friday they needed to free that area. Dr. Christie said it took about 10 minutes to complete the procedure and all went well. (They spent much more time setting up the room, installing the equipment and creating a sterile environment.)

The second procedure was the insertion of a feeding tube. The tube enters the abdomen and then is routed through the stomach into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. They prefer this location, rather than the stomach itself, because this prevents food being vomited up which would then have the potential of being aspirated. The procedure took about 30 minutes.

Susan told us later in the evening that, in addition to the facial surgery on Friday, doctors might, at the same time, repair her damaged right knee.

Speaking of Friday’s surgery, Susan asked special prayers for Shea’s face that she be spared any paralysis. She said so much of who Shea is is her expressiveness, the love she shows to everyone in her beautiful face.

Susan, Steve and Jesse had supper at Ronald McDonald House. We joined them after that and had coffee together. David and Joy Pippenger and their son, Jonathan joined us. and then just as we were leaving, Luke and some friends appeared. Luke had spent the day in Atlanta—Susan felt that was a good thing. We all gave him early birthday wishes—the big day is tomorrow. By the way, please check out the special posting at the top of this blog and add your birthday wishes and prayers.

In the conference call tonight, we were also giving thanks for the many, many people who are joining us in praying for Shea and holding her up for healing. Friends of friends are telling their friends and it seems every day we hear of someone who approaches one of us at church saying, How’s Shea? We’re praying for her.

The news continues to be good. The increments of progress are small but they’re all in the right direction, the direction of healing! We so grateful for that. It’s a privilege to be here and to feel the power of faith, hope and family!

Steve & Susan,

It's Trish Preston here. I was just reading about Luke going to
Atlanta. I just wanted to encourage you with both of the kids that I believe you made a good decision. I know that your normal reaction is to want everyone there with you. I know that I struggled while we were in the hospital with my dad. I finally let Josh & Kaeley go with one of my sister's friends for the night and Andrew went to the racetrack with another racer to stay the night. I really had to fight that, but I do believe it was wonderful for them. I was in the same situation you are in. I was in Las Vegas and did not know a soul. The kids got some time to decompress. We lost my father that night and I was relieved to be free to be a daughter and not a mother at that time. His passing was absolutely beautiful and I could remain focused on that. Let yourselves be parents to Shea and spouses to each other without other distractions from time to time. You won't believe this one. You know what kind of mom I am, but at the church after the funeral Andrew asked if he could go with his friend from CA. I thought he meant to the hotel, but he meant to CA. I said yes, and away he went. Do you believe, I did not know what town they lived in, the mothers first name or when or how he was coming home. The father said, "We can get him some clothes, and I will call you with flight info to pick him up" I was crazy enough to let him go and then realized after they left that he had never flown by himself. WHAT WAS I THINKING?
Andrew still talks about that trip. It was just what he needed. He needed to be free to play and be a kid.
We are still praying constantly for you all.

Dearest Shea and family...

It’s your friends from SBC evening choir! We miss you so much! We had so much fun in that choir. LOL... sometimes, maybe a little too much fun! Whoops! But girls will be girls!

We are praying for you every day. There isn’t a day that goes by that we aren’t on here looking to see how you are doing Shea. And how wonderful it is to see each day’s successes! You are progressing beautifully each day and it is so wonderful to know how many people have you in their prayers. The whole worship team at our church is praying for you, as well as many many others. God is using this story in so many ways already! You are such a testimate to His love, grace and strength.

And everyone can’t wait to get your CD! WOW Shea! Your songs are absolutely incredible! Your voice is so angelic and passionate! I (Briana) keep listening to them over and over at work. I LOVE them. I only have two right now… So I can’t even imagine what the rest of the CD sounds like. I can’t wait!

I know that each day brings new challenges and trials, but you have an army of angels with you. Matthew 18:20 - For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. And guys… you have two and three times 100 praying for you around the country. Be encouraged. You are wrapped in prayer and being held in the arms of your Heavenly Father.

We love you so much!

LUKE!!! HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY!!! Stay strong... Psalm 18:32.

Luke,

We want to join all the other well-wishers to say "Happy 16th Birthday." We're sure this was not the way you were planning to celebrate the big day but we so thankful that your entire family is able to celebrate together. Also, George thinks it's great you are having a birthday party at McDonalds!

Lots of love and prayers,

Luke,

I just wanted to send you a Happy Birthday from New Mexico. I know it must be hard celebrating a birthday with such a heavy heart. Please know that we are praying for you. We are thrilled to hear of the progress your sister is making. From what I hear she might not be in such a good position to recover if it were not for you. You make us all proud. Happy Birthday man.

Love,
Jonathan, Melissa, Emma, and Johnny

Dear Luke,
May you have a blessed birthday. 16 years and a whole lot of experiences. You are definately a man who will go far.

I remember when you came to Connecticut for a week and it was hotter than Phoenix-remember? Now here you are in Georgia. I predict you live in Alaska when you grow all the way up-you're pretty grown now, but you know what I mean. It's actually pretty nice in Alaska.

I can see your bright smile and your kind eyes in my head but I never know what color to imagine your hair! Here's to a year of growing closer to Shea and Jesse and your mom and dad. We're forever grateful to you for all you did on that fateful night. Sometimes I bet you wish YOU could take amnesia medicine but I trust that you will slowly integrate your memories into the magnificent young man your are becoming and keep looking to the the future God has planned for you since the begining of time. I'm looking forward to seeing it unfold.

A big birthday hug from me,
Aunt Liz
