An Active Morning

Dear Family and Friends,

This is Kathy Falk, Susan's sister from Knoxville. My husband, Charley, and I arrived yesterday along with my father, Jerry Anderson.

Grandpa Anderson was the first to join Steve at Shea's bedside this morning. He said that Shea was showing signs of recognition of him almost immediately, and she was much more active than yesterday. Steve told me that he could tell from Shea's nose and mouth, together with her tears, that seeing her grandpa made her cry.

Charley and I arrived a little later and took Grandpa's place. We had already heard from Steve how improved her coloring was this morning. The nurses said that this was due to the blood transfusion. Her cheeks were pink, and she just generally had a healthy glow to her skin. Aside from the swelling from surgery, you would never know that Shea had sustained such serious injuries. Her face, arms and legs are without scratches or cuts, except for a couple of small cuts around her eye where access was gained to repair her bones. Her lips are pink, and she looks just beautiful.

Shea continued to respond to her dad and to us. She opened her right eye often and clearly tried to talk to us. She reached out to Steve with both arms, and turned and did the same to me. Steve talked quietly in her ear assuring her that her inability to talk is only temporary. I wondered if she might be questioning why all her relatives were coming to visit her, so I assured her that we were coming to see for ourselves how well she was doing. She seemed eager to talk, her lips moving and her eye looking right at us. (Her left eye is swollen shut from Friday's surgery.)

Concerned that too much stimulation was not good for her, we backed off. Steve told us that he had been advised to be careful that Shea not be overwhelmed with too many voices or faces as this could be confusing to her just now.

These are uncharted waters for Susan and Steve. They don't know what Shea is thinking, and they want to anticipate her questions and allay her fears. On the other hand, they don't want to answer questions that she isn't asking, not knowing emotionally what she is ready to hear. Continue to pray for wisdom and discretion for them.

Doctor De LaCruz reported cutting down on IV medication and increasing oral medication through Shea's stomach tube(G-tube).

After Shea's more active morning, her sedation medication was increased to encourage her to rest, but overall they are cutting back on her sedation to encourage spontaneous breathing.

Today's X-rays showed that the pneumonia is responding to the antibiotics, and that is good news, but her temperature remains at a little over 39 C. (Approximately 103 F.) All her bodily fluids are being cultured to help them ascertain the nature of the infection.

Shea's right arm is swollen, though the swelling is less today. Earlier in the week they X-rayed her arm and determined that there are no fractures. They are keeping an eye on it but don't seem to be too concerned.

After witnessing Shea's desire to talk today, the nurse suggested that a picture board be introduced to her soon. She would be able to point to pictures which would communicate her questions or desires.

Luke got his first hug from his sister today! He assured her that he is okay and that she is okay too. We have all questioned if she remembers seeing him on his birthday and if she has been wondering if he is okay. Susan said that Shea became very emotional at seeing her brother. What a sweet reunion.

Jesse and Evan are working on their schoolwork together, a good arrangement for both of them. When they finish, they will go to play basketball and work off their pent-up energy.

It is so good to be here to witness first-hand our Shea's progress. We continue to hear wonderful stories of God's grace to her and her family. These stories should all be written down so that one day she will see for herself God's hand on her life.

A happy birthday to both Liz Anderson and Steve Eimers today! Enjoy your celebrations!

Kathy Falk

Wow! Thank you Kathy for your input on today. Such a blessing. Glad you can be there. You must have been writing while I was checking in and reading what David Pippenger had posted and the comments. Cool timing! We are still praying and excited about what God is doing there in Georgia! Praying for you, Steve and Susan as you continue to choose to praise God through this hard time. The song you listed is a favorite of mine. Love you all!

Hi Shea, What a lucky girl you are to have your Uncle Charlie, Aunt Kathy, Your grandfather, and Evan visiting you. If you don,t mind I will say a warm hello to them!!! I have never met your grandfather but Your Aunt Kathy speaks of him so much with love
Shea , I understand you love to sing. I bet you would be singing Christmas carols right now so I thought I would sing YOU one today.

O little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep , the silent stars go by.
Yet in the dark street shineth the everlasting light
The hope and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight

God continues to work his wonders in your healing!

Dear Shea and Family -

How awesome is our God!! It is sooooo good to hear and read the beautiful progress! WOW WOW WOW! It simply amazes me, each day, to hear how many people are praying in my church here in Scottsdale. It is so humbling to have so many people coming up to ask me how you are doing Shea. What a delight it is to tell them about Gods healing!! :)

Shea - may your heart be comforted by the Holy Sprit's flood inside of you. May your soul be warmed in the arms of your family. You are so cherished and loved by SO many!!

I know that the times ahead may be very hard on your precious heart, but remind yourself each day that you are being held in the arms of your heavenly father and that he lovingly carries you through each challenge, physically and mentally. There is just one set of footprints in the sand right now! ;)

Steve, Susan, Shea, Luke and Jesse - I know you know this, but it never hurts to be reminded. You are all being carried in the arms of our Lord and Savior. Where there once was 6 sets of footprints there now is just one set. You are all snugly wrapped in his powerful arms. And remember that he won't let you walk on the sand again until he knows that you are ready.

I love you guys so much. You are such an incredible family who continuely poors out God's light and love to all that you come in contact with.

Stay strong and stay in love! And know that we are all here praying, crying, smiling and rejoycing with you!

With so much love and prayers,

Briana Lefebvre

Jesse, Luke and your parents are such great inspirations - you and your family are a hard act to follow!

Me again...

Kathy...I think you are a great moderator...or should I say, "blogerator".

I am so thrilled to know of more progress today. I will pray immediately for Susan, Steve and others that will need wisdom when explaining to Shea, what has happened. The inmates and I will continue to pray for her emotional well being as the fog of this whole thing begins to lift and she is informed.

Love hearing such encouraging news about responses to Luke, Steve and grandpa etc etc

Praise Him for beginning to evacuate all the pneumonia.

Shea...we love you, sweetness!
Stevie Wonder and Susan...we love you too and SO wish I could be there RIGHT NOW ... just to administer a GI-normous hug!
Lukus...ditto to you "mah bruddah"
Jesse...if I was there, I would bust a quick Rick Springfield chorus (Jesse's Girl) for old time's sake...you would just look at me with that puzzled look...you know the one...the one you always give me when I do that...the look that says, "I have no idea what you're singin' about...I never heard that song before and by the way, why do you always sing that thing every time you see me?" ...you know, THAT look. What can I say, Jesse...God just made me like that and you love me anyway, right?

Beautiful Shea Stahrr 4 Life!!

Hey girl! Today was a "snow" day in Texas! It was more like sleet...but I didn't mind becuase classes got canceled. The leaves here are changing colors, and I know you would just love it here. They are bright red, hot orange, and a beautiful yellow. It is so pretty. I am encouraged to hear more good news about your recovery. I cannot wait for you to get better so we can have a shape reunion! Kelly and I are talking about it already. I love you beauty, continue to heal!

P.S. Can you all not give Shea a pad of paper to let her write any questions she may have? I suppose it still may be too early. I am praying so much for Shea's mental health as she recovers. Suni and Steve: you are in my thoughts and prayers daily. I love you all.

We thank and praise God for the healing that has taken place and for what is yet to come. The Lord is using you at this time for something wonderful. Even though at this time we may not understand. We know that one day soon when this is all behind you, we will look back and see the great work He has done in you. We continue to pray for your strength and healing. You have come soooo far, and we praise God for this. We love you all and look forward to seeing you.

Dear Lauren Shea,
Praise the Lord! That's what hundreds and thousands are doing when they hear this good news. Heal up Sweetie. I can't wait to tell you some more cop stories of how Phoenix PD whooped some bad guy tail. In fact that's where I'm headed now at 1am our time. I love you Shea.

Oh Shea -
What good news we are getting. We look forward to the updates and check the website on an hourly basis to see how you are doing.
Our family is looking forward to having Luke and Jess this weekend. Hopefully Megan won't make Luke study too much. We have piles of games to play with them too.
You are such a strong girl and we continue to pray for you at B.B. Harris and across Gwinnett County Schools. We love you girl - even though most of these prayer warriors haven't even met you - they love you anyway and are so touched by your courage.
Stay strong - we will see you soon.

I'm so happy to hear the good news in these updates. It's very touching to hear how she is connecting to people.

Shea is on our minds daily, and I've got the congregation at my Synagogue praying a 'Mi Sheberach' healing prayer for her weekly. I told my mom, and now her church has her on the prayer list as well.

We are all pullng for you, Shea!

-Aaron (and of course Lorna).

What an incredible use of this tool! We daily check to see how Shea is doing and then come before the Lord with the new requests! You all have been so much in our prayers, thoughts, and converstations. Yesterday, Alexandra was dancing in the kitchen singing, "Intimate Father", aka "Internet Father" :) and wanted to know where Shea was and when was she coming back so she could see her. She still adores her and plays her CD. Just wanted you all to know that you are loved and brought before the throne daily. We love you- Cyndi Ball and crew

Dear Hickok Family,
I am another one of those you don't know. My son, Nick Fiedler, sang at Mike's funeral. He had called and told us about the accident and we immediately lifted Shea up to The Greatest Physician. Nick has kept us posted. Our church has joined you in prayer. May God continue to grant you the Joy of the Lord!
