Update and Report from visit with Dr Carey

Dr Narsinghani and the nurses reported this morning that the Lasix had succeeded in a greater output of urine. Pain was under control with the phenobarbitol and morphine. Shea's temperature was 39.3 C last night and Dr. Narsinghani said they have found the source of the infection. The bacteria colonized from the sputum culture meaning that there is an infection. Her anti-biotic was changed to Bactrim. Now that they know what they are treating, they can be more focused and aggressive with treatment. The hemoglobin was 9 yesterday and dropped to 7 today. If it goes any lower, he said, they would give her more blood. He ordered her feedings through the stomach tube to be increased. Shea's chest X-ray this morning revealed a little fluid in her lungs but they assured us that it would be readily absorbed.

Dr. Carey arrived about 2:30 this afternoon. He was very pleased with how Shea is responding.

Steve asked him about any nerve damage regarding her left eye. Although Dr. Carey worked around the nerves, he assured us that he was able to stay away from the nerves. Steve also asked about her eyesight in the left eye. Dr Carey was unable to know the status of her eyesight before surgery so he could not say for sure. This is one of those areas we will know better when Shea awakens.

Shea's septum had many fragmented bones almost resembling cornflakes. She has splints up her nose supporting the septum. These splints will remain in place for
1 1/2 to 2 weeks. It is possible that Shea may need to have a bone graft from her hip to fix this. For the time being, Dr. Carey just wants to keep an eye on it.

Shea's jaw, when relaxed, aligned quite well, but when she awakens and moves that area we will have a true appreciation of the success of the jaw surgery. Her jaw will be wired for a minimum of 2 weeks. The wires on her teeth will remain. Rubber bands will be used on the top and bottom teeth to further support the jaw area.

Dr. Carey explained that the dental surgery will be a long, long process. First of all, Shea's mouth needs to heal for 4-6 months. He added, "Perhaps a year." The main concern is to have adequate blood supply to that area. After they are satisfied that she has healed, Shea will undergo an operation for a bone graft. It takes 4-6 months for that to heal. After that surgery, he builds a root structure and that takes about 3 months. So, it will be at least a year before Shea can have teeth implants.

Susan and Steve would like you to continue to pray for Shea's healing. Also, in the next few days the nurses will decrease the medication so that Shea slowly emerges from her almost coma-like state. When she awakes, Shea will most likely be totally unaware of what has happend to her; that she was even in an accident. At this time she will realize that her jaws are wired, she has a tracheostomy, is in an unfamiliar place with many unfamiliar people and that she is in a great deal of pain. Eventually she will be told about the length of time for healing and her dental work and that she has rehab ahead of her in another hospital. At the appropriate time, Susan and Steve will inform her of the accident and about Mike. We are so grateful for your outpouring of support and your many prayers on Shea's behalf. Please pray now for Shea's emotional health and healing.

Thank you,
Jeanne Burch

Dear Shea, Gary and I want you to know that you have people from Bethel Baptist Church in Jamestown, NY praying for you. Our Pastor Jim from "day one" has asked the congregation to pray for your healing. Your Uncle Charlie and Aunt Kathy and Evan are missed. They are wonderful people and I am so glad they are coming Tuesday to see you.I [Joni} belong to a christian group of women called Esther [from the Bible } on the internet. We are worldwide so all over the world people are praying for you. For example;Africa,Sweden, India, Sinapore, and Australia. I found out about your blog from a member of Esther that went to one of your concerts about a month ago. She emailed all of us members to pray for you, You can imagine how surprised I was to find out who she was talking about. Get well and we will continue to pray. In Christs Love, The Williams

Dear Shea...

Some day soon, you'll be able to read all these notes and know how enormously loved you are by so many.

Each day we come here to learn of the progress God is making in your healing. Each day we are so encouraged.

Your God.
Our God...
is SO faithful and true.

He has answered all our prayers for you, Luke, Jesse, your Mom and Dad, Dr. Carey and all the others caring for you. And He has done it in such amazing and miraculous ways! Many have watched spellbound as your great God literally brought you back to us and then displayed his spectacular majesty each day as He began healing your brokenness.

Dear Shea...you are an incredible work of God's healing hands. And there are so many of us -- loved ones and concerned spectators alike -- whose lives are also being individually healed by Him through this magnificent work.

We will continue to vigilantly pray with even greater passion, for all the specific needs you have -- knowing God will continue to faithfully answer them and restore you to us all.

Some day soon, I know we'll play some music together...you'll sing. The doctors, the nurses and many, many prayer warriors will all gather to celebrate that day when we'll ALL be able to praise Him and worship Him together in song.

Until then...tons of love and lots of virtual hugs upon you!

Steve and Sue,

You must be going through what amounts to a crushingly difficult time right now, and if it were possible to come up with some sort of words that are remotely able to touch that place with any type of comfort, I would find them. I think very few of us around you really understand, as parents, what level of exhaustion, emotionally and physically, that you are experiencing. All that I can come up with over and over again, that seems in any way appropriate, is: You are deeply loved, and have been all our lives. You are prayed for constantly, and everywhere. Whatever resources we can offer are and will continue to be here, for as long as you need.
We're praying most of all for your rest and peace, and of course, for Shea's healing. God knows your other needs, and I truly hope you feel Him right now...

Love always,

Hayes

I miss seeing your beautiful face at my house every time I come home from school. I miss you being my 3rd sister. But I know before long you will be with us again going to family dinners and family vacation. If anyone can get through this, you can...I love you so much and will continue praying for you a million times a day.
I Love you,

Shea:
We keep on praying for you to rest and let the Lord heal you. Know that you are deeply loved -- here on earth as well as in Heaven, where our Father loves you with a perfect love.

There will be many days ahead when you will be able to read these comments over and over again. For now, rest in the arms of Jesus.

Hickok family: We pray also for you - as Hayes said, we can't even begin to know how you must feel and what you're going through. Just know that our love is with you, as imperfect as it is. Our Father, who loves you with an everlasting love, holds you all in the palm of His hand.

From Hayes' mother-in-law
Dearest Susan and Steve,

You have no way of knowing me, other than I'm Hayes Conner's mother-in-law, Sheila's mom. Because I sit in tears, as so many of us do, tears and prayers for you, your family and your dear girl, knowing we don't understand the kind of pain you endure. We frequent the website we've bookmarked, searching more information, some hope of good news that our prayers have bent God's ears, like little kids wanting our favorite toy. All the while you just want to have your daughter back in your arms again. What a simple request.

We all want to make everything better, better now. I look at the picture of your family, young - smiling, happy, energetic, and wonder how, why. You are too tired and pained to even ask the questions. Usually there are no answers any of us would understand anyway.

I pray for a moment of 'normalcy' for each of you, for healing and comfort for your precious girl Lauren Shea. May you feel some measure of comfort in knowing others are praying for you when you are too tired. We will keep walking by your side.

With a hug,
Susan Wild

My son and I had only been coming to Bhe Bridge for a week when the accident occurred. Jared met Shea for the first time at Ignition the Sunday before the accident. He participated in the prayer service for her the following week. When Jared learned of Shea's progress, he felt it was as though it was in a way a sign of God's power just for him, since we were not "church" people before. Now, he never misses a chance to be with the other young people from the church, and his whole attitude and outlook have changed. I just wanted you to know that the spirit of God is very much awake and alive in my teenager as a result of this accident, and I hope you can draw some strength and hope from it.

Dear Shea,

I don't even know you, but I know Liz Wisniewsky. When I first heard what happened a bunch of my friends and I got together and prayed for you. We asked God to let you live.
I couldn't really understand what that meant until I came to this site. Reading about your condition has put me in tears multiple times. I will continue to pray and hope that at the end of this ordeal you will want to shout God's praise because of his power and healing.

A brother in Christ,
Eric
