Prayer Requests

Dearest Family and Friends,

How good it is to read your comments each day and your love messages to Shea and the family! We are all taking a corner of Shea's mat, as it were, and like the men in Mark 2 who lowered their friend through the roof, we are taking our Shea to Jesus. Judging from what we are hearing, every hour someone somewhere is praying for her.

Since we know that you are checking the blog so that you can pray specifically for Shea, we'd like to enumerate some requests. Steve asked me last night to ask you to pray about the following three things:

1. Weaning Shea from the ventilator. Gradually the ventilator will be dialed down, and she will be doing more and more of the work of breathing. Pray that her body adjusts to this weaning.

2. Weaning Shea from her medications. She has, of course, been on some heavy sedatives and pain killers. Weaning her from these must be done carefully with the least discomfort to her. Please pray that she will have no long-term dependence on these drugs.

3. The possibility of brain injury. There are so many unknowns with Shea right now. Until she is totally conscious, the full extent of her injuries will not be known. Naturally, the family is concerned about this, so we would request prayer that God would continue the healing He has so wonderfully begun and that He would give a renewed sense of the nearness of God to the family.

It's important for everyone to know that we are all thrilled with Shea's progress, but we know that may be a long road ahead. Susan and Steve will need endurance for all that will be required of them. At this point they don't know what the future holds, but they keep reminding themselves to rest in the One Who is already there.

In addition to these requests for Shea, it's important too that we continue to lift up Susan, Steve, Luke and Jesse in prayer. As was reported yesterday, Steve is sick with the flu. As the head of his family, his responsibilies are enormous and can lay heavy on his heart. Susan and the boys are fighting off colds. Last night Susan looked so weary after she came back from the hospital that I did what any big sister would do: I sent her to bed! She didn't resist. (She's always been such a good little sister!) The physical as well as the spiritual and emotional weariness are a natural part of a crisis like this, and we need to remember to pray faithfully.

I am at the Ronald McDonald House where we have access to the computer. Susan hasn't left Shea's side because Shea is so restless, drifting in and out of consciousness. Susan told me that nurse Laura encouraged her to continue to tell Shea what has happened to her each time she wakes up and seems to want to communicate. Then Shea will go back to sleep and wake up again and again. Each time Susan is to tell her the same thing. Eventually it will sink in and Shea will remember. When I asked Susan how she would know that Shea is remembering, she said that Laura assured her that Shea's body language will say, "Okay, I know." She will react in an almost angry manner, probably more frustrated than angry. Laura said to Susan, "You will know."

Susan just called again and said that Shea is quite emotional today, crying every time Susan talks with her. By crying, we don't mean sobbing, but there are tears in her eyes, and you can tell from her nose and mouth that she is struggling with deep emotion. Susan said that Grandpa Anderson is by Shea's side. She reached up and put her arms weakly around his neck. He leaned over, returning her hug, and put his face next to her cheek. He whispered to her, "You're alright, Shea. It's going to take some time, but you are going to sing again." Shea cried and cried. This is so sad for Susan to watch, but in a way it is good because, she said, "That's Shea." She's responding in love and gratitude to her dear Grandpa.

Thank you, dear ones, for loving Shea enough to carry her to Jesus.

Kathy Falk

P.S. Jeanne just called. She is enroute to Augusta, Georgia, and received word from her daughter Meredith that Jason is being released from the hospital. They have determined that he is not suffering from the same heart condition his father had. He's being put under the care of a physician at home where he will be monitored. Thank you all for praying for this family.

I was just singing that song, My Redeemer is Faithful and True, and another part of the song came to me. Wanted to share it.

My Redeemer is Faithful and True
Every thing He has said He will do
EVERY MORNING HIS MERCIES ARE NEW
and MY Redeemer is FAITHFUL and TRUE
And when I lack the understanding
HE GIVES MORE GRACE TO ME
MY Redeemer IS FAITHFUL and TRUE!!!!!

May His grace and mercies cover each of you,

Denise

To our precious friends, Susan, Steve, Shea, Luke and Jesse,

Our hearts just ache for you all - and we just want you to know how much we are thinking about, and praying for you all. We pull up the blog a few times a day, as we just want to know the latest on you, Shea, and want to know how best to pray for you. We are so grateful for the fact that we can have up to date news on you all, daily.
Susan, our friendship goes back to 1999, when we were in our Newcomers class together at SBC, and you have always been so special to me. As a mother, I cannot imagine how difficult these past few weeks have been, seeing your 'baby' lying there so 'helpless'. You have the Lord's strength though, and we just know that He will 'carry' you through these unbelievable times.
Please be assured of our continuous prayers for you all, and Shea, we look forward to hearing you sing again. You are so beautiful!! We look forward to seeing what our Lord is going to do in your life. We pray that you continue the healing process and get stronger every day.
God bless you all.
We love you!!
Your "South African friends",
Rob, Bev, Christi, Matt and Kelly Forrester

Thank you Kathy, we so appreciate the daily updates!

Dear Father,
I lift this family to You, and pray that You continue to comfort them. Please give them strength to endure the everyday struggles that each and every one of them face. I pray now that you keep them all healthy and strong both in body and in mind.
Father God, help Shea through the uncomfortable period while the doctors wean her off the ventilator and medications. Lord, protect her brain and keep it far from any injury. We know that You already know what needs to be done and if there is anything that we don't know about that is damaged, heal it before we even know... before any testing is done. When the doctors do the testing and we do find that Shea is 100% we will give You all the glory, knowing that you healed our dear sweet Shea! Father, Please give peace and comfort to Jesse and Luke. Life has changed so drastically for the entire family and all the routines of a normal life for Jesse and Luke have ceased. Give them patience and endurance and peace beyond understanding. Lord, Steve and Susan need Your wisdom in making decisions and also the endurance to continue to be there for Jesse and Luke and continue to be at Shea's bedside.
Only You God, can do all. Only You God, can be everywhere, Only You God, know the future...we rest in You. Amen

Hickoks,

It was really great talking to you today, Sue, and I thought it was funny how it was ME hanging up feeling encouragement and peace. There really aren't words to describe how God is using you, in the middle of your pain, to demonstrate the practicalities of true grace and love, wrapped in the beautiful image of your family's bond in Him. I find myself being changed in the daily prayer and observation over this story, as I'm sure many will echo. You are so loved, and I'm so grateful for you, my friends...

Dear Steve & Susan,
You don't know me. I sent a comment and started praying on Nov. 19. I just wanted you to know that I pray for Shea nearly every day. I heard about the accident from Pastor Steve Johnson through an e-mail. I believe his son and daughter-in-law are friends of Shea.

Please let Shea know that she has people she doesn't even know in Arizona praying for her as I have passed along updates and given the blog address. Praying Col. 1:11 for both of you to be "strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience." I'll pray for good health for you and the other prayer requests for Shea as they arise. May the peace of Christ dwell in you and comfort you during this most difficult time.
In His Love,

Hi Shea We are checking the blog a couple times a day and are so grateful for it. Sounds like you are doing a great job getting better. It may not seem like it to you but every day you are showing improvement and your life is a testimony to God's goodness and faithfulness to all around you. We have never stopped using Shea'isms around our dinner table. If somebody is grumpy someone always says "you need a nap" and Rachel and I still sing "I'll be a sunbeam for Jesus" whenever your name comes up. It's been hard keeping her from getting on a plane to Macon ever since she heard but I told her that she can come when you are bored and sick of the hospital. Then she can come visit and drive you nuts!!!
We will continue to pray and look forward to all that God has for you. We love you sweetheart The Sunderlands in Phoenix

Thank you -- thank you -- thank you
Esteban...for the prayer request
...rest assured we will be very specific in lifting up all of those plus prayer for you and your flu...for Susan and her fatigue... continued prayer for Shea and the emotional healing that must accompany her physical healing.

Hartley told me this morning that he had a great chat with Lukus last night and felt like he was doing really well. That was so encouraging to me. Luke is such a gift!

How I miss your smiling face, my friend. How I miss the banter and the serious chats...giving my pal a hug and just being around all the really splendid energy that is part of sharing the same air with you.

I love your daughter Esteban and I love you and the rest of your family. The boys and I are here for you...for the duration...on our knees with our arms extended around your whole tribe...even if its in spirit.

I think of you every single day. Your art is displayed in every part of my house and its such a joy to have you there.

We will be together soon...

Sweet Shea,

I took Autumn shopping the other day and she noticed a beautiful little doll with long blond hair. She picked it up and said, "Mommy look, it's just like Miss Shea." She LOVES your hair! :) We stopped there and prayed for your continued healing. I asked Autumn if she remembers her very first prayer for you after the accident and she said YES! "Please Jesus make Miss Shea's body better - I know you can do it!" I said Autumn you are right!!

Rest as Jesus continues His awesome work in your journey of healing.

With much love and many prayers,
Jodi & crew

Steve & Susan,
We love you guys! Know that we are standing in the gap for you... praying for you each day.

Susan--you are constantly lifted up in prayer, and I know you would ask that we pray for Shea, which we are, as well. You and Steve also need our prayers and need everything our Father will give you; please accept this love from Him and us. You need more than you'll ever say, so please know that you are covered in prayer all the time and rest in His arms.

Steve--please use this flu to rest, as I'm sure you know you've got a long road to walk. God's putting you down now so you can be ready for that walk. Please rest and get better.

Shea honey, I'm so happy to hear of your healing and your progress. I wish that it could be painless and over, but you're so strong. I pray for your healing in God's time and thank Him endlessly for your precious life. Please rest in His love.

To those who write on this site--you are such a blessing! The time you take to update daily gives people like me more opportunity to praise God for what He's doing; not only in Shea, but in all of us. I thank you for your faithfulness and your commitment to the Hickok family and to those of us who delight in Shea's progress. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
