Shea's Surgery: Looks Good for 3 PM Today

It's 10:30 AM. I've just returned from the morning rounds.

Shea's temperature is still elevated, still around 101. But Dr. Narsinghani said several times, "I don't see any reason why she can't undergo surgery today. We feel the infection is localized, probably in the lungs or in the sinuses, and this poses very little risk to the surgical site."

So, in spite of what we heard last night, it looks like it's a go. Surgery will start around 3 PM and could go as late as 3 AM Saturday. So keep praying that Shea stays strong and the temp stays low.

Mrs. Hickok's Surgery at 6 PM Mountain Time
I just talked to Susan and she confirmed that Steve's mom's surgery is scheduled for tonight. They're going to be doing wrist surgery after her recent fall.

So we have two surgeries on the same day! We can double our prayers and ask God to bless the surgeons and the nurses and all who attend them today.

They Lit a Big Tree for Shea Last Night!

Last night, when we left the hospital, Susan and Jeanne and I saw a big commotion right in front of the hospital. All was set for the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree.

Santa Claus was there hugging the kids. The DJ from the local station was the emcee. Several hospital execs and local dignitaries gave speeches. I saw a reporter from the local paper taking notes on her steno pad. A camera crew was on duty and a white truck with a sattelite dish was parked nearby. And to top it off, the string orchestra from the high school was there. They even had a harp! They were all wearing those little red velvet Santa hats. They played a beautiful medley of holiday carols, ending with Silent Night. We stood there and sang along with the crowd.

One little boy from the children's hospital, who was being treated for leukemia, had been selected to flip the big switch. So, on cue from the DJ, we all counted down: 5-4-3-2-1-0 and suddenly the huge green tree was awash in light.

We know that this is an annual civic celebration. But last night we chose to believe that the whole town of Macon had turned out, with the orchestra and the DJ and all the dignitaries, and the reporter and the camera crew and Santa too--and that they'd put on this whole show outside our hospital all for our little Shea.

Thank you, Macon! We love you!

We saw the tree on top of the hospital on our way to church last night and my 8 year old daughter asked if I thought Shea could see it. In our opinion, Macon did light the tree for Shea last night.

My daughter has her 3rd grade class praying for Shea's surgery today.

I'm praying for you, Shea, as you're no doubt being prepped for/going into your surgery right now. Am listening to the two songs posted on the blog, and hearing you sing "He formed me with His hands..." from Song in Me just made me cry. How beautiful. I trust and pray the surgeons' hands will be led by His, to re-form that beautiful face of yours.
Looking forward to the praise report!

Hello, Hicock Family.

I keep this e-mail handy for any number of occassions. Thought you might find strength...

Thank Him today because—
He formed you and made you.
He has given you the breath of life.
He has given you this day.
He is working in you to become all that He has intended you to be.
He is working everything in your life together for the good.
He is using your difficulties and trials to conform you to His image.

Thank Him today for—
The forgiveness of your sins.
The peace that passes all understanding.
The smiles that have come to your face because His joy is in your heart.
The comfort of His presence that has quieted your heart and calmed your fears.
The hope that is in you because He has promised to always be with you.
The place in heaven that He has reserved and has prepared for you.

Thank Him today with—
Words of exaltation.
Songs of celebration.
A heart of strong devotion.
Thoughts of deep reflection.
Acts of admiration.
Claps of loud ovation.

Lauren,
This is Laura Gutwein, Bob and Martha Ring's oldest daughter. Your Mom was my 3rd and 4th grade teacher at Heart to Heart, and your Dad was my art and music teacher.

My mom was pregnant with my little sister, and I remember your mom always being excited and asking me questions about it. I laugh now, but I couldn't understand why in the world she would want to know about things like that... she and Steve didn't have kids... so why would they care? (I have no idea why I thought that.)

Not long after that we were told that they were pregnant! (ohhhhhh, now I get it!!!) All of us girls were so excited! It was especially fun towards the end of your mom's pregnancy because when we tried to hug her, our arms couldn't quite reach around anymore.

I never really got to know you, but I did feel like I knew your parents, your Grandpa Hickock and your cousins Carrie and Sarah. So, in a way, I always felt like I knew you too.

(tears are dropping on my keyboard) I know that our God is faithful, and I will continue to pray for you and your sweet family. Hang on tight.

Love Laura
