We Have Teeth!
After about 25 hours spent in the doctor's office last week, Shea finally has some temporary teeth! They are shorter and smaller than her real teeth, but for now, it is the best they can do. Because her jaw is broken, Shea's teeth have moved forward leaving very little space to place the temporaries. Nothing can touch her gums, so they put the three teeth in a clear retainer -- like Invisalign -- and she wears the retainer along with her teeth. The doctor gave Shea a mirror to see her teeth for the first time, and she said, "Dr. Mils, I can't believe I'm so excited to have dentures!"
We have to tell all of you about Shea's adventures this week. There is never a dull moment, and we have laughed more this week than we have in months. Dr. Mills has taken great interest in Shea's story. Each day he asked her more questions, and many of the doctors and nurses gathered around to hear her tell about it. On Thursday, Dr. Mills said, "Shea, would you mind if I interviewed you and we videotaped it?" She said, "sure" and never thought much more about it. On Friday afternoon as Shea was in the dentist's chair, a camera crew, with camera and lights approached Dr. Mills and asked him where to set things up. Shea started laughing and couldn't believe he had gone to such great lengths to do this as he is a very busy doctor. She was hoping that she could wear her new teeth for the interview, but, oh no, they weren't ready yet! Dr. Mills wanted Shea to lisp her way through it!
While we were at the office a beautiful woman came in to have work done on her teeth. She had obviously had some cosmetic enhancements and was sharing with Dr. Mills that she wasn't satisfied with her teeth and wanted them perfect. He said to her, "Come with me. I want you to meet someone." So he took her to Shea's room and introduced her to the woman. He asked Shea to show her "before" picture and tell a little about her story and how she was coping. It was a great opportunity for Shea to share her testimony and God's miraculous work in her life. Dr. Mills later explained to Shea how thrilled he was to show this woman, constantly concerned about her outward appearance, that real beauty is from within.
We left the office at closing time again on Friday! The staff told Shea that they will miss their "Ray of Sunshine" next week as we don't have an appointment there. It wasn't a typical quiet, dignified office atmosphere last week, thanks to Shea!
Saturday was more of a down day for Shea. She wanted to go to Starbucks, shop and get out of the house. We were unable to take her, so she found her car keys and decided to drive herself. We reminded her that she has not been released by her doctor and cannot drive until she takes a driving course. Shea was upset. "I never did have a brain injury. . . I finished the brain rehab . . . why do I have to keep proving myself to them?" She spent time crying and questioning, but after awhile Steve sat on her bed with her and encouraged her. So many others at Shepherd Center are much worse off. Shea has the hope of one day driving, working and getting on with her life, and many of them do not. This is a time of testing, and honestly, Shea is tired of being tested. So we're letting all of you in on the good and the bad times to show you that although Shea is trusting God with her future, she's real and has her tough times as well.
Tonight our family spent a quiet evening together. We drank coffee and played "Apples to Apples." Shea is the least competitive, yet she always wins! We're grateful that even in the midst of trying times we are blessed abundantly. Bill and Anna came over to show Shea their new puppy. We sat around our kitchen table, and they shared story after story about Mike and his crazy antics. We laughed at the memories yet our hearts were saddened again for our loss. They're always a big encouragement to Shea -- just like family. So much that Shea even takes her teeth out in front of them!
Love and thanks,
The Hickoks

Shea,
Please know that while this time in your life seems so dark, it will be THE time you look back on in order to gain strength in the future.
Jesus must love you so very much to allow you into this valley. If he didn't, you wouldn't be here.
There is a song that I wrote, called 'What I Can't See' and it's on our MySpace page. If you get a moment, take a listen, because it came from my heart when I was going through some very difficult times.
I pray for you everyday Shea...everyday.

Shea,
I have never met you, but from your picture, you are a beautiful young woman. Think about the woman you met last week, who was so obsessed with looking "perfect". Many people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in their struggle for perfection. With all of your surgeries, none of them by choice, who is to say that at the end of the day, you will not be better than when this journey began? Surely, for someone so young, your inner strength has already grown and become so much stronger than before. Because of this, your outward appearance can only follow. When you think of all the people's lives you have touched, you must glow, from the inside out. Therein, lies your beauty.
H
Hey Shea,
You are my hero... you know that, right? You are beautiful. You are my bueatiful hero and I want to be like you :)
I would love to take you shopping...just let me know, I will be there in a heart beat. I am praying for you and know that our God is still healing, still making miracles, still hears, still restores, still there to meet us and put His arms around us and tell us how much He loves us.
I hope that you will have an awesome day. You are so strong and I am proude to be your friend. I have a lot of friends in Russia and Europe praying for you. God is closer than you think. Love you a lot, Natasha.
Shea, dear...
With or without your little teeth, you are always on our hearts in every way. I want to find something to encourage you, but I'm hoping that you're not getting to the point where you feel like, "Yeah, I know, that's what you said three comments ago, and again two before that!" Suffice it to say, that we will never get tired of telling you that we love you, or how wonderful you are. If I were there, I'd give you a piggy-back ride to the mall and to Starbuck's, then immediately have you drive up and down the street in front of me, so that I could let whoever is in charge know that no further questions regarding your skills are necessary. None of this would make me tired, because I'm very, very strong. I love you, and love to hear about how you're doing from week to week....

Shea,
I'm in AZ, but I sure wish I could take you to Starbucks too!! Just like Bob Wade told us when our daughter who is 24 comes back to the Lord; the victory will be even greater. Well, pretty soon, when you get to go to Starbucks- it will be a sweet victory, and it wil be so great!!! My daughter Kelly, was so involved in youth group, but is now in the world. You are touching girls and people just like her. Just in your quiet, boring place right now; amazing things are happening, that one day you will see!!
Praying that these days will go by quicker and quicker!!!! Hang in there, and remember this is just a season. Let yourself get really ready and strong for the next season.
You are in my thoughts and prayers so much,
Denise N
SHEA, it was so super duper great to see you tonight. Even though I didn't really have a chance to talk about much, I am so glad that I got to introduce myself to such an amazing person. You are so wonderful. Please know that there are so many people on your side, on God's side, here at KSU and all over praying for you and lifting your name up to the heavens. Praises to our healing Father!! Be still and know that God is good. Keep looking to the heavens girl and never give up. I know coming from a person that has no comprehension of your situation, it doesn't mean much, BUT... I have had knee surgery (ruptured ACL and torn meniscus), and I know how incredibly painful that was... so I'm trying to imagine that pain times 100?? AHHH. You are so strong. Praise God for that! I hope you find peace during all your rough times.
P.S.- Your teeth are really nifty! :-D

Shea,
It was so great to see you this evening at the memorial/dedication of Mike's bench at Kennesaw State. The descriptions of your recoveries in this blog don't even do you justice as to the amount you have overcome. It was a blessing to see you out and about and as positive as ever, and you truly are the miracle girl that everyone speaks about. I know your road to full recovery will be a long, strenuous one. But I, as well as countless others, are praying for you every step of the way.
You are an inspiration to us all!
- Rob Nolen
Hey,
You don't know me and I don't know you other than this blog. I go to KSU and met Mike through my learning community. Your story has truly inspired me. It was good to see you out tonight. Never seeing you before besides some pictures, you truly are a beautiful person inside and out. I was gonna come up and speak tonight but I'm not good at meeting new people and I didnt want to seem weird. Keep looking up and know that God is always there for you! I continue to pray for you each night. God Bless you and your family!
Love In Christ,
Dawn
Hey you movie star, you!!! wow, so should i expect to see you on some like dicovery health channel or something?!? well, im so thrilled that you are feeling so much more confidant and liking the temporary fix.
I felt your frustration, though, over not being able to drive, im sure you feel like you did when you were a kid, always depending on mom and dad and around their schedules and whatnot. but i hope today is a better day for you. actually im kind of surprised how quick you want to jump back into a driver's seat. i wouldn't drive for weeeks after my accident and it was only a fender bender!!!! im sure this sounds cheesy, but im sure god has his reasons, even though its the little stuff. i just think of all the near crashes i miss or all the bad drivers that don't almost hit me when god puts something in my way that doesn't allow me to get on the road till after i had anticipated. his timing is perfect, he knows what i can and cant handle and he puts barriers in my way all the time to keep me from getting on the road at that crucial split second. it may sound crazy but with every second, god could be protecting you from something else, you know? But i will pray for your "cramped" sense of freedom.
well, early class tomorrow and i have to teach....... a naplin fold to the class! wow, big stuff for me alright. can you believe i spend so much money to go to a culinary institiut and learn to fold napkins in 15 diferent ways!?!?!? Further proof that only God knows his plans for us! well love you and ill talk to you soon.

Dear friends,
Thank you for continuing to share the ups and downs you are all going through. Shea, we are happy that you have some teeth. What a wonderful opportunity to be able to share with the lady striving for outward perfection. It is such a privilege to be able to learn about your encouraging times, and also to know how to pray better for you in the discouraging times.
My Mom is still in the hospital (8 weeks now). She is in the rehab section of St. Joseph's but her dementia is in full swing now and she keeps questioning where she is and why. She often doesn't remember that we've been there for hours - every day since this began. We just need God's peace to overwhelm our whole family and especially her.
Take care. We are heading to Bible Conference in a few weeks to visit with our homesick Karen Louise.
Love to you all.
Linda Guthrie
Dear Shea;
Even though we've not written in a long while, please know that you are never far from our thoughts and always in our prayers. We continue to read about your miraculous journey and praise God for all of His blessings to you and your family.
Much love,

I haven't written before. Rather techie illiterate. However, Dan (my son) encouraged me to try again!
I read your site often -- and so does my granddaughter, Lauren (Sarah's cousin). My dentist and his wife are in a home group which I attend. I have shared with them about your latest dental challenges, and they (along w/ the rest of the group) are also praying for you. I also pray for Luke and the rest of your family , and the Jones family, too.
I have been praying for you ever since I heard from Dan about the accident. Through your struggles and pain, it is amazing how the Lord is using you. You are a miracle from Him for His purpose. Only He can keep you strong -- even when you don't feel it.

Shea,
Thank you so much for giving me a call on my birthday! Yes I do remember you, expecially that time we went up to AGM's show and to say the least that was an interesting car ride. It really meant alot to me for you to give me a call. I'm still praying for you and your family! Also, your voice is still amazing.

Hi Lauren Shea,
Last night I had a dream with you in it. You had come over to our house and Becca and I were able to see you again. Wow..what a beautiful girl! I was going to make you a fruit smoothie in my dream but you had to leave :(.
That is awesome that you were able to recieve your teeth. I am going to school for what you just got. That is awesome! It sounds like you are happy about it. I will be praying for you. Keep trusting in God. You have such a wonderful testimony!

Just wanted to let you know that I am continuing to lift you up in prayer. I hope you are having a great week and that you have a strong feeling of hopefulness. It is so easy to get discouraged, but take great hope in what our God has done for you so far. He will continue to restore you. Stay strong. I love reading your story and every time, my heart is just warmed by how good our God is. Your pain is so deep and real, but he will heal it for you. I am so excited about your doctors and know that they will be forever changed by their encounter with you and your family.
Lots and lots of love and prayers for you.

Shea,,
I was just listening to that song by Telecast, called Absolution. I just love the words in it. The girl singing at the end has the sweetest voice, and she really reminds me of your voice. It talks about how the Lord sustains us and how lonliness brings the friendship we need. For He is really our best friend and is always with us!! telecastmusic.com
Love singing that song as a prayer and in this world that is sometimes so lonely, He indeed is the friend we need!!
I was also thinking and praying that the things we share make you feel better in some way. That you would feel the outpouring of our hearts and love and care for you!!! I just hope that we don't say something that would make you feel worse; like you are supposed to be so perfect or something. We all have our roller coaster up and down times. We can talk the talk and say the words, but in our own lives need to hear what we are saying to you just as much!! We just pray that they would lift you up a little and in that way, you are helping us to hear what we need too!!! We just want you to know that we so care about you and pray for you to feel better!!
Wherever you are, or are going through, may you feel the love of your best friend who is always right there with you.
Praying for you Shea,
Denise N
Well, "Ray of Sunshine," it's another amazing story we are reading. Praise God! What a beautiful thing, Shea, that at your young age, you are deepening that "inner, unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." Praying for you. Love, Sharon & Gaylard
Dear Hickocks: You know this has become like a book. Picking it up to read the next chapter to see what is happening in the characters lives. I have come to love you all through your telling of your story. I was thrilled to see Shea got teeth, and the message the Lord shared with the overly concerned young woman with her appearance through Shea. My heart ached for Shea that she couldn't drive herself and I felt her frustration.
Her story has been a huge blessing. Maybe one day it really will be a book. I'd buy it. Love you all. Debbie Miller
SHEA! it was so amazing to see you at Mike's bench dedication! I'm so so so glad that I got to see you, talk to you, and hug you! I've missed you very much. I can't wait until our girls' night! It's going to be so much fun. You're such an amazing blessing, girl.
Love you,
Lauren Kelly
If you haven't read it already, there is a newer comment under the "Toothless Wonder" post. It is a most tender and moving description of "A Father's Love" ... written by a father who truly seems to be a good image of our Heavenly Father.
It's worth going back to read. (Thanks, Tim!)

I have fun reading the comments... so I want to know... how many offers have you had to take you to Starbucks now?
I usually sign off with my winky smile ;-)
But for you and your new teeth, I smile this way today: ;D

Hi Shea,
Dave and Jules sent me your story and CD. I know them both from college. Dave was my roommate for a couple of years. I haven't had a chance to read everything on your blog yet, but I will. Yours is and inspiring story and from what I can see, a WHOLE LOT of folks really love you and are praying for you. I will too.
