Homeward Bound!!

The computers were down here at the hospital until this evening so I finally wrote a pretty lengthy report. Unfortunately, I lost the whole thing when I tried to post it. And so it goes.

Dr. Kaelin came into Shea's room and announced that she will be dismissed from Shepherd Hospital tomorrow morning!!! "Joy comes in the morning"! We are thrilled to finally put hospital life behind us and get home. Shea looks forward to hanging out at home and sleeping in her own bed after six weeks.

We had many meetings today with all the therapists and doctors and got all the necessary supplies -- a wheelchair, walker, etc. We thought we would take Shea to a rehab hospital close to our home where she could spend a few hours a day and maybe three days a week, but after consulting with everyone, we decided to place her in Shepherd's Pathways Rehab. It is an intense rehab -- five days a week from 9-3. You can imagine Shea wasn't happy about that at all. When we were in Macon, Dr. Troup, the neurosurgeon saw that Shea did have spinal fluid at the frontal lobe of her brain. He suspected that she would have dificulty with her executive thinking skills, organizational skills, etc. Dr Dan, her neuropsychologist here, shared her test results with us today and said that Shea soared through the whole test except for this very area. She has been living in a very quiet and controlled setting for six weeks, and their desire is for her to get back to her normal life as soon as possible. At Pathways, they are very agressive and try to get you through their program quickly and thoroughly. Once Steve and I made the decision and explained it to Shea she was fine.

Today as we were eating lunch in the Group Room, a man on a red scooter came in. He rolled right up to us and introduced himself as James Shepherd. He is the reason the Shepherd Center began thirty years ago. He had a surfing accident in Brazil, and his parents had such a difficult time getting rehab care for him that a year after his accident they opened Shepherd Center with just six beds. He shared the details of his accident and encouraged Shea on her journey in rehab. Mr. Shepherd had heard of the miracle in Shea's body and wanted to meet her before she left. It's hard to believe that we're really going home tomorrow. We can't wait! Thanks again and again for all your prayers and comments. We are amazed at God's faithfulness to our family. Sometimes the days here get a little long, and oftentimes Shea will say, "Why don't we read the blog." We laugh and cry and, of course, everything seems much brighter again. Last night Shea looked at herself in a mirror and tried to work her facial muscles. She still can't raise her left eyebrow and has quite a bit of swelling on the left side (Shea told me to tell you this. She said, "Aunt Liz thinks I'm beautiful no matter what I look like, but she has to say those things about me -- she's my aunt"!!) Shea tried to smile and make it even on both sides -- she showed us where her teeth were missing -- "I'm not kidding, I look like a country farmer!" We laughed so hard we cried. It's great to see that she can laugh at her temporary situation. She's comfortable with family but is still apprehensive of other people seeing her. Just before I left to type this I asked Shea to move her muscles on her face as much as she could. She felt tingling in her left cheek and I saw a new flicker. We started to cry, and she said, "I feel like I'm being 'knit together' again. Please thank everyone for praying." It is beautiful to behold a miracle before our very eyes. Thank you thank you thank you.

I Timothy 1:17 "Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen."

With love and gratitude,

Steve and Susan

Praise God, and congratulations, Shea! This is terrific news, and we share the thrill and joy of knowing you will get to sleep in your own bed tomorrow! Maybe you can joke your grandma through her rehab, as you will both be doing exercising at the same time, at least for a short period. (Hers probably won't be as long as yours.) Her wrist cast was taken off today, and she was fitted with a "splint." She was hoping for all of it to be done, and she was not too keen to know she has to go to therapy twice a week for awhile. She really is a good little patient; it's just nicer to be independent, of course. We love you, Hickoks! Happy New Year to all of you. Gaylard & Sharon

Wouldn't it be great to have so much faith that we actually expect such miracles??

I know six weeks seems like a long time when you're living it, but I remember the heartbroken email from my brother, David, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, asking for prayer to spare your life, Shea. It doesn't seem that long ago. And here you are ... not just alive, but whole in spirit and mind, and well enough in body to go home to your own bed. You truly are "fearfully and wonderfully made" ... and re-made!

I can just picture God and your dear Mike standing next to you as you work through each step of your recovery, crying as you cry, laughing as you laugh ( ... you KNOW there has to be a great deal of laughter in heaven ... God has such a great sense of humor ...), and helping out with hands that cannot be seen. I wonder which one reached out with their finger and put that dimple back into your cheek? :-)

Happy New Year, Shea.

Susan and Steve, you and the boys are still in my prayers, too. How is Luke doing? Are his injuries healing well?

May you all sleep well once Shea is home again. A miracle!!

Dear Shea and Family,

You don't know me, but I am a member of SBC's Sunday morning choir. I knew of your family only from that remote association. We first heard of your accident the Sunday morning after. I have been compelled to check the blog ever since. There I have found miracle after miracle. I shake my head at God's faithfulness - doing the absolute unexpected. He is indeed an awesome God! What He must have in-store for you and your family! The tesimony alone has and will continue to inspire hope in countless others. Even in your pain ALL 5 of you have witnessed to those of us who have been reading this blog. You have shown us what it means to rest in His incredible power and love. May our God continue to work in you - strengthen, and ultimately use this experience to encourage others in whatever trials they are experiencing. God bless each of you - Steve, Susan, Shea, Luke and Jesse.

And, thanks to your extended family and friends who have kept all of us updated via the blog throughout this incredible ordeal.

With much love,

Susan & Bill Blair

Steve and Susan, this is incredible, I'm so happy for you! I'll bet Luke the Man is just going nuts. He's on my very short list of personal heros.

And Shea... you are really something! I've heard stories before like yours but I am really glad I got to witness one first hand. You are a work of God every day! I don't know how many you have on your blog "staff" but there must be a lot of them... and I'd like to meet them all someday.

You know what you should do now? Get one of those little digital recorders and post an MP3 of your own voice. I for one would LOVE to hear that.

Take care of your parents and your brothers little girl...DB

Well Miss Shea, you are finally going to get to sleep in your own bed. Wooohooo!!!!!

Oh...and we all consider you "family" now, so we couldn't care less if you do look like a "country farmer". In fact, I have some overalls that you could borrow, to make the picture complete. You can't live in Georgia and not own a pair of overalls...LOL!!!Now, I know that we women are self conscious about our looks, but your extended "family" knows what really counts...what is on the inside. That is all that we care about. Don't worry about showing yourself around us. And...if worse comes to worse...you could spike your short hair like mine, ROFLOL!!!!

We are thrilled that you are home and will continue to pray for you during your rehab at Shepherd. The Lord has been so amazing up to this point and he will be there for you to lean on during the rehab.

We can't wait to see you back at church. It will happen before you know it.

With Love,
Mark and Amy

Shea, Hi, another "stranger" you dont know with a comment! But I must say I am soooo happy you are going home! I was so concerned this would be much longer than it has been because I have seen it happen to others... I am sure from your perspective you just want to get on with normal life. But let me encourage you, these people at rehab really know there stuff. I am continually amazed at what they can do. So work hard and WOW them! ;-)

I think if you a lot because we showed the "famous" video "Hoodwinked" to some kids the other day so now I see the video jacket and that is the connect for me.

Wow, this is so exciting. I know you guys said that the updates would be less frequent, but I keep checking!!! I am so excited to read that you are going HOME! This is great. I will keep the Hickok family in my prayers. This next chapter will have its own set of challenges. Blessed be the name of the Lord through them all, good and bad. This accident has been a true testament of your family's faith and an encouragement to so many of us who don't even know you, although I feel like I do!
Shea, I can't wait to hear you sing at church again. You have no idea how God uses your beautiful voice to touch so many people. God always spoke straight to my heart through your voice when you would sing!
I pray that God will continue to knit you back together, especially your heart (your outward appearance is a very easy task- you are such a beautiful girl!!!). I pray this for your family and the Jones'.
Another long scripture post, but I couldn't resist! Take a look at the rest of Job 38 and also 39- these chapters remind me in such clear terms of how powerful God is. When your therapy seems dreadful and impossible remember that God put the sun, moon, and stars in place- as well as the ocean- he will heal your body and give you the grace each day you need to live an abundant life!
Lots of prayers and love-
Marian Madden

Job 38:4-13
4 "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone-
7 while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?
8 "Who shut up the sea behind doors
when it burst forth from the womb,
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10 when I fixed limits for it
and set its doors and bars in place,
11 when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther;
here is where your proud waves halt'?
12 "Have you ever given orders to the morning,
or shown the dawn its place,
13 that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked out of it?

We were thrilled to hear the news that you're going home today! We share in your joy and excitement. You'll be going to rehab on weekdays, but at least you can sleep in your own bed every night.

We've been praying for you each step of this incredible journey, and we will continue to lift you up to our heavenly Father as you begin the rehab process. It won't be easy, but we're sure you'll meet this challenge just like all the others--with determination, perseverance and trust in the Lord.

We love you!

Tears streaming down a face you have not seen...
Tears of sorrow,
Tears of joy,
Tears of hope and love,
Tears of thanksgiving,
Tears for the old,
Tears for the new,
Tears in wonder and amazement,
Tears for a miracle given by the only One, The Miracle Himself.
Tears for one whom I have never seen...
Tears as we rejoice together and cry
Thank You, Daddy God.

What a thrill to know you are home now sweetness!

(today is 12/31/2005)

What a fitting way for our Great God to close the year 2005 for all of us -- to have miraculously healed our beautiful Shea in time to be home for the beginning of 2006!

Osmond and the Danger Boys are sending their full bounty of love and hugs across the "fruited plane" to all of Wonder's fam especially her "Shea-ness".

"H" spoke with "Lukus" the other day and really appreciated his time with him.

We will coninue to pray fervently for God's blessings and healing hand on you Shea...in every way. What a spectacular plan He most certainly has for you. Praise to Him for all His glory and faithfulness...I am so grateful!

In no time...you will be singing His praises again. I hope we'll worship together soon...

Shea and all the Hickoks:

CONGRATULATIONS!

HOME - What a great place to celebrate New Year's Eve!

We will continue to pray for your hours in rehab. We pray that you'll just fly through it, like these last 6 seeks have flown by. (For you, they flew by 'cause you were asleep much of the time. Of course, for mom & dad and the rest of the family, they've gone much slower ;~)

Like James 1 says, this trial was a test of your faith - it tested the faith of many of us - but we know that the end resut will be your perfection, complete and lacking in nothing:

2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,
3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Love to all -- and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Susan, Steve, Shea and family,

That God is so very faithful streams from the knowledge of His action in your lives. We realize you have a difficult time ahead, and pray that you will find it a little lighter knowing others continue to hold your names before the Lord.

We are grateful for the opportunity to express our concern for you on this blog - dedicated to encourage Shea. We realize the journey isn't done and pray the New Year will bring healing, and a new measure of happiness. May your family experience fully every blessing God desires for you.

We praise God for every healing you have experienced - and continue to experience.

Our very best to you for 2006.
In our prayers always,
Susan (Bardlady) and Frank Wild
