An Amazing Day in Macon

Shea slept very little through the night. She worked all night at trying to sit up or get out of bed. She might have had a few 5 minute times of sleep, but not many. Surely, she would sleep in the morning.

Susan arrived at 8:00 this morning and it didn't take long for out day to be underway. First, Allison, her speech therapist arrived and worked with Shea on pointing to numbers and letters and a "Yes" and "No" sheet to answer questions. We have worked with Shea in the past with a pen and a marker but she didn't seem to be able to hold it properly or quite understand what to do. Well, today, as tired as she was, she pointed to all the right letters and numbers, pointed to her eyes, mouth, nose and ears and her mom on command. She answered correctly the Yes and No questions, such as, "Do you have a sister?, Do you have one brother?, Do you have two brothers?"

While the nurses gave Shea a bath, Susan and I went for breakfast. When we returned, Aimie told us that she walked by Shea's room and saw her propped up on one arm and motioning Aimie to come to her with the other hand. She tried to tell Aimie something over and over. Aimie gave her the board and thought she could make out an 'h' in Shea's writing. Aimie gave her the alphabet board and Shea pointed to an H, an O, and a T. She repeated the pointing to the same letters. Aimie asked her, "Are you hot, Shea?" Shea nodded her head. So, the communiation is improving.

A little later in the morning, the nurses moved her to a special wheel chair.
It lays flat like a bed so they can easily move her. Once in place, the nurses strap her in and then lower the chair to a sitting position. To the cheers of all the nurses standing inside and outside her room. Shea was wheeled down the hall weakly waving back to them. We took her to the sunroom to let her get some sunshine and see the blue sky. It was wonderful to see her sitting and in a new environment. One would think that this would do wonders for Shea and that is what we hoped. She cried through most of the experience but we were not upset; the drugs withdrawal has now become ICU Psychosis. This results from the many drugs she has been on for over three weeks and from being in a confined area.

This afternoon I arrived back to the hospital from a nap and wondered where everyone was. There were 7 nurses in Shea's room, and with their help, Shea was standing at last. The rest of the nurses were cheering and clapping outside her room and soon she began walking, with their assistance, to the door of her room. She had the motions down-- right, left, right. Very tired by the time she got to the door, the nurses moved a chair behind her and she sat down. But not for long. She pushed herself up and they helped her walk back to the bed. We were all exhausted. Surely Shea would sleep now. She struggled to get up again and has been so agitated that the doctor has prescribed Theraquil, a drug that is non-addicitve and helps with ICU Psychosis. He said that it doesn't really kick in for a couple of days and we can expect a couple more intense days like today. We feel like she is going at a pace that is almost humanly impossible. Non-stop struggling and activity with no sleep for nearly three days.

Even though she is in this state, she amazes us with her ability to do what we ask. Susan showed her a blown-up picture of Shea and her friends, Kelly and Amy from Scotsdale, AZ. "Shea, can you point to Kelly?" Susan asked her. Shea pointed to herself in the middle of the picture. She mouthed the word, "ME." Then on command she pointed to Kelly and then to Amy as if to say, "What's so hard about that?"

There have been times when we have needed at least 3 people to keep Shea in bed. Please pray that this period of struggling and sleeplessness soon ends.

We can certainly praise God as we have seen Shea moved to a chair and then walk. We can pray for her continued strength so she can soon do these things on her own. She so desperately wants to. She is fighting hard--and that's an understatement!

Susan's sisters, Kathleen and Karen arrive tomorrow. Karen is flying in from Dallas and Kathleen is returning with her husband Charley to help us out during this difficult period. Please pray for their safe travels.

Once again, we had excellent care today. Tracey and Aimie are probably home exhuasted right now. They had a long 12-hour day working with Shea. I have to say that when I arrived at the hospital today and saw Shea standing and all the nurses cheering, I thought to myself that if the nurses were not in uniform you might have a hard time telling which one was her mother. That is how invested they are in our Sweet Shea.

Susan,

I know that the Holy Spirit will continue to undergird you and give you strength that you never imagined you had. "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:29-31) God has given you strength! May that thought encourage your heart today...

Steve and Susan, May you experience rest too - sleep, and supernatureal rest in your souls.

You certainly are strong willed and determined! I am so impressed at the rapid improvements you are making. I'm glad you have pictures of Kelly Diamond and I around your room, I know we both have pictures of you all over the place too! I thank God for the little signals that you are okay in there :) Get better girl, and try to rest. I'm praying for you girl, for a speedy recovery, but don't do things faster than you should, little love.

Dear Shea, Suasan, and Steve. I found out this AM that Kathy and Charlie are returning. I know they will be a great help to you. Just Kathy's quiet soothing voice will be very calming to you, Shea. As I have told you my "Esther Sisters continue to pray for yoour entire family. One of my "sisters" from England said the most beautiful heartwarming prayer for you this AM. Shea, the "sister" that attended the concert just before your accident keeps every one informed on how you are progressing by reading your blog and passing it on. She has been responsible for encouraging everyone not to quit praying.
Hey, how about another Christmas song tonight?
"What child is this who laid to rest, On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary

Heavenly Father...it indeed has been a busy day in Macon. There has been great rejoicing with Shea's hard work and progess. As You know, Father, human bodies grow weary with so much going on and I ask that Shea be able to rest better tonight. Bless the family members that are arriving so that Susan and Steve can get some well needed rest. Oh.God your awewome ways continue to amaze us even though we all know that there is not anything impossible for you. Surround Shea and her family tonight with your angels. I ask this in your most holy name amen

Shea, You keep up the hard work, but we're praying for rest for you. "The Lord grants sleep to those He loves." And we know He loves you!

PRAISE GOD!

Shea, we are so excited about your constant improvement and your will and determination in striving to get through this. We haven't stopped praying for you! Sometimes Chris will be concluding our prayer time together and I'll chime in saying..."Don't forget about Shea!" He, of course, already has it on his mind as we close our prayer time together each night with thoughts of you. Keep on keeping on girl!

Steve and Susan, you are not alone! We think of you guys often!

Susan, I remember when I was going through some difficulties awhile back in choir and you just sat there with me, holding me in your arms...not even being your own daughter and comforting me. I wish I could be there to give you a hug now too as you go through struggles and frustration with seeing your own little girl in pain.

Please know that through the love and comfort of God and our prayers on your behalf, HE has his arms around you, comforting you at this very moment.

Steve- as any amazing father would be...we can only imagine the heavy load you are carrying for your family at this time. Know that we will be specifically asking God to help you "cast your burdens onto Jesus" and be there to give you strength.

Jesse and Luke- You two are quite the warriors! Your strength, courage, and strong will to fight on behalf of your sister through prayer, encouragment, and love is truly admirable and we are confident that HE will see you through this battle that has begun.

God's Blessings on you all tonight and Shea, rest darling!

Love- Chris and Kelly Shondelmyer

Dear Shea, Susan, Steve and family,
I continue to marvel at the strength of the entire family as you go through this together. It is wonderful to know that Shea was moved to enjoy the delights of sunshine. I continue to pray for Shea's healing. She is a determined young woman, and God is using her as an example of what faith can do. I know her feats are great but small, yet we can all glorify him for each day she improves and gets stronger. Love to all of you!

Our dear friends, we are covering you with prayer and praising God for Shea's progress!! We'll talk soon, but I just wanted to let you know how encouraging Sunday was at SBC. Sean and I have a hard time getting more than a few feet at church without someone stopping us and asking about our Shea. Some of these dear people we are meeting for the first time and connecting with because of Shea. I think my favorite thing is hearing over and over that people are neither laying down to sleep nor rising in the morning without praying for her. And then they'll say that they've never met her. Wow! The Holy Spirit is moving in mighty ways to lay her name on people's hearts even now. I have encouraged them to post notes to you, so that you will hear from them their thoughts and prayers. We hope you are resting tonight knowing there is a warm blanket of prayers surrounding you. Much love always, Cate

Shea, I don't know if you remember us or not but we are the yout group from Lawrenceville First UMC. My name is Jay, the Middle School Pastor, and I met you that night and you shared your beautiful gift of sining with us that night during the praise and worship night and we were all left in amazement. I told our students about your accident and I had a few girls take home some pictures from that night and they have placed them in thier Bible as they continue to pray for your strength and recovery.

You are a very special woman and we are all joined to gather in prayer for you.

Dear Steve, Susan & kids -

Ever since (my brother) Josh and Carie called to tell us what had happened to Shea and to ask us to pray, you have been in our constant prayers. Those first critical hours, you were in my prayers moment by moment. God really impressed upon my heart to pray for Shea as I would want others to pray for one of our daughters. It is so exciting to be able to tell our children (and their best friends, who also pray for Shea daily), how God is answering prayer!

May God give you the strength and the peace for the journey that lies ahead - we'll be with you in prayer & spirit.

I lived in Macon 25 years and always said there were extra special living there. I am thrilled you are having a good experience with the staff, doctors, and community. Please call if you need extra hands day or night. I have been fighting a cold but the new medicine is working and I am available when you need extra hands or just a ear to listen. Shea,

You know from your babysitting experiences with our girls that we've had our share of bedtime struggles. You can put them to bed, but you can't make them go to sleep!

Well, sweetie, they're putting you to bed, and you need to sleep. I pray that He will quiet your mind, body, and soul, and when sleep does come, that you will REST. May your spirit be strengthened and renewed.

Good night!

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep.
O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart. Psalm 36:5-10

Again, God's mercies are new every morning and all through the day! I hope that sweet Shea had a restful night and I hope today is full of miracles and blessings. I pray that Shea will be filled with the amazing peace only our Father can provide. May you all rest in the shadow of God's wings. With lots of prayers and love,

I was in devotional time this morning, read this and just had to share it with Shea.

Read: Mark 6:30-34

He said to them, "Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." —Mark 6:31

God writes the music for our lives. Our role is to follow His lead—humming, harmonizing, blending, and singing in tune.

Serving the Lord, like singing, can be stirring and rewarding. But when we are set aside by illness, the interludes can be frustrating and unfulfilling. When God says to us, "Come . . . rest a while" (Mark 6:31), we may not want to stop. It seems that our performance is over, that we've come to the end of our song.

If we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed with our inactivity, it will cause us to focus on our defects and our circumstances. But we need to remind ourselves that the Lord may be using our time of rest to make our music better.

The Great Conductor is counting time with precision. There is more to the arrangement than we know. If we keep our eyes on Him, in time He'll enable us to chime in again.

In the meantime we can enjoy the rest. The quiet times are opportunities to quiet our souls and compose ourselves for the measures that lie ahead. The rest is not a mistake, nor an omission, but a necessary part of the symphony God wrote in the beginning and is conducting for us every day.

The Conductor knows best Wait on Him

-Our Daily Bread

I'm still praying for all of you.

Christy

Hey Susan and Steve,

You guys are amazing!

God has given you a difficult task and you are rising to his calling. Shea is a fighter and will be back on stage singing her heart out in the not too distant future, of this I am certain. But for now, you two have been given the awesome experience of seeing God working before your eyes. The incremental and challenging steps that Shea is taking, even though they are baby steps, are a demonstration of his desire to have the Hickoks become living witnesses to His power, mercy, and grace.

Take heart that this season, though trying and emotionally draining, will be short. God is further refining you, as two of his top tier servants, for even greater years of ministry ahead. Already you are ministering to thousands around the planet in ways that are immeasurable.

We are both crying and celebrating with you as you proceed on this journey. May this phase of that journey be a short but blessed one. I look forward to seeing the inspiration this experience will have on your art.

Soon we can laugh again together, plan worship services together, and listen to Shea sing together. In the meantime, take solace in the fact that we are praying for you, thinking of you, and looking forward to seeing Shea walking very soon.

We'll be down to take you out to dinner again once Shea is settled down a bit. :-)

Love you guys,

Dan & Leigh

Dear Steve and Susan,
Praying and prasing God for both of you and most of all for what He is doing in Shea life right now. She is an amazing witness of the life in Christ. Without saying a word, the light and life of Jesus is shinning, reaching and changing the life of those who are around. Like Ryan says all the time 'I am stoked'. I pray that you will experience the power and strength of the Lord Jesus in your life. And for Shea rest, rest, rest in the loving arms of the Father. I miss you all. Please let me know if I can do something for you.
Love you, Natasha

We are better able to pray, hearing of specific needs of you and your family, and we also have the benefit of feeling a bit closer to everyone as we read the comments from so many friends and family. What a great testimony of God's family coming together to minister and be ministered to.

What a beautiful thing that happened last night. We got to meet the band that stopped to help the kids after the accident. What a humble group of saints they are and how amazing that they were there to stop and help our kids. They have written a song about that night - we will get it to you when we get a copy.
It is so good to hear about how our Shea is doing. I saw one of my 5th grade girls wearing the most perfect earrings for Shea today. They were shooting stars.
We pray for rest - for all of you.

Shea,
It made me cry tears of joy to read about all the progress you have made. Shea, God's healing power has been pouring through you and the progress you have made has shaken the ideas of what people believed to be possible. Your life and your perseverance has shown God's marcy and power to us all and challenged the faith of so many. I know that the next time I see you, whenever that is, I will probably cry a lot. When at first they thought you weren't going to make it, I was a wreck, I was so sad that I was never going to see my friend again. But now you are taking all of these big steps in your recovery and it blows my mind. I am so happy that you are still alive, and that you are everyday taking another big step towards full recovery. Keep fighting dear Shea! You are in my prayers constantly. I love you so much!
