Day 5 without sleep

This is Karen, Susan's sister, reporting. I arrived yesterday afternoon, and how wonderful to finally see Shea! With so much of the facial swelling gone down, she looked much more like our sweet Shea--just beautiful!

For Susan, this has been one of the hardest days so far as Shea continues to go through the difficult process of drug withdrawal. She has gone four days and nights without sleep, and now we are in day five. It's heart wrenching to see Shea so frustrated, frantic, and agitated, knowing that she is so tired but can't sleep. Shea is trying to communicate by writing, and sometimes it is very clear while other times she starts sentences like "I want you to ..." and then isn't able to finish. At other times she writes letters on top of each other. She is partly lucid and partly like in a dream. All of this is a normal pattern for someone coming off drugs, but it is still so hard because we feel so helpless.

This morning Shea had light therapy to help with depression and to get her body clock back on track after being in a sleep state for so long and then being awake the past four days. We are praying that this therapy will be effective.

The ear, nose & throat doctor came by today and reported that Shea has a blood clot on her right ear drum. They will sedate her for five minutes tomorrow to extract it. Then, while she is still sedated, they are going to put in a smaller trach that will allow her to talk.

Prayer Request:
Please pray for the restoration of the nerves in the left side of Shea's face. The doctors don't know if she sustained nerve damage at the time of the accident, so they are planning to do a cat scan to determine if the nerve damage is temporary or permanent.

It is a privilege to be here in Macon. A special moment for me last night was when Shea reached up and put both arms around me and hugged me. Kathy and I are taking shifts today and through the night so Steve and Susan can get some much-needed sleep. Steve especially needs extra rest as he is fighting the flu.

We can't thank you enough for your prayers. Steve and Susan both expressed how they have felt "lifted up" during this very emotional and difficult time.

Some of you have asked about Shea's CD, and we will be getting you information about this very soon.

Kathy,
Welcome to our ever growing family of concerned believers for this wonderful family.

Today several of ladies from our womens ministry gathered together and prayed vigoriously for Shea's continued recovery and strength and endurance for the adult team that are assisting in her round the clock care.

As mothers, we all emapthize with Susan and Steve as parents watching their baby have to go through this ordeal. We also prayed for Luke and Jessie and their relationship with Mom and Dad through this difficult time.

God Bless you for keeping us updated. Our family will continue to lift this entire family up to the Lord several times a day.

Hickoks,

What a hard thing, you guys...It must feel to you like the withdrawal phase is never going to end, but we're praying it will early. We're also praying that her experience with the talking trach is positive, and that this will relieve some of her anxiety. We love you...

Dear Hickok Family,

Jeff and I were just reading the latest blog...each of you are a real-life definition of where our strength ends HIS continues on!
Our family and friends all over the country continue to ask how Shea is doing and how they can be praying. Know that so many are interceeding on your behalf. May you sense in a very real way that His strength is perfect!

With much love,
Jeff, Jodi, Landon & Autumn

Sweet Shea!

How hard for you to go through this time! No one understands what is going through your head or filling your heart ... no one except your Savior. He hears your silent cries and is interceding for you. God alone knows the "why" of all you are going through, and you will know the "why" of it one day, and be able to praise Him for His work in your life through this experience.

Psalm 119:73-77

[73] Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
[74] They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.
[75] I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.
[76] Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.
[77] Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.

He will bring you through. I'm praying for you, too.
********************
Susan and Steve (and Kathy and Karen, too),

When the magnitude of the emotion and helplessness and physical demands threatens to take you down, just remember ... it is only for a short time. You won't have to bear this burden forever. There will be times when you will need more than that knowledge.

In caring for a dying parent who reqired all my strength and emotion for extended periods of time, I found sometimes I just had to say, "I can do this for another hour ... or 15 mintues ... or five minutes..." whatever you feel you have strength for. Then do it again. It was a coping device that worked for me. Combined with the strength and peace God provided, I kept on keeping on, and my father never knew how exhausted and broken hearted I was.

Keep up the good work for your girl. You are in my prayers.

My heart rejoices in the fact that God is being praised all over the place through this tough situation. May His Name be glorifed. Shea is ministering to people all across this land and she doesn't even know the wonderful work she is doing for His Kingdom. Thank you for ministering to to others in Christ as they are ministering to all of you. Don't grow weary in doing good. I am lifting all of you up in prayer that He comforts you, guides you, heals all of you and substains you during this time of difficulty. You minister to my heart each day when I sign on to read what wonderful works our Lord is doing in Shea's life and each of your lives and those around the globe that are affected by this. Much love in Jesus, Debbie Harmon, Lilburn, GA

Shea,
I just wanted to let you know that I am praying for you and your family right now. I played this past Sunday morning at church and it just wasn't the same without you and your family there. I'm so sorry about everything that has happened but I know that God will use this in your life and do something great with it. I'm praying for you everyday and I hope that God will give you a huge amount of strength in this difficult time. I'm here for you if you or your family needs anything. God Bless!!!

Dear Steve and Susan,

God's strength is made perfect in weakness. He will hold you up through this trial. Shea has been treated with the most powerful psychotropic drugs avaialable - she needed them, but coming off of them is extremely challenging. Keep hanging on to Jesus.

Yours in Christ,

The Yardleys
